The Pump Drill: Kinematic Decoupling

Transition is the highest-load window in the Final Boss Method: reverse club mass, apply GRF, and slot the shaft—in roughly a quarter second. Overload triggers the classic fault: arms throw outward before the body shallowing sequence completes.

The Pump Protocol isolates transition so arms can free-fall onto the Elbow Plane before rotation accelerates.

Trains

Prerequisite: Wall Walk or stable hub via Forehead Post if early extension co-occurs.

Over-the-Top Delivery

  • shoulders and arms fire first from the top
  • club mass moves outside the hands; shaft steepens
  • outcome: slice pattern or pull left

Fix: decouple arms from core—free-fall first, then rotate.

See the full position chart for every checkpoint.

3-Pump Sequence

Use a mid-iron. 10% speed. Small motion only.

  1. Pump 1: From , hinge to —shaft parallel to ground. Freeze.
  2. Pump 2: Allow arms to drop vertically into the slot (hands in, shaft shallowing). Freeze at lead-arm parallel ().
  3. Pump 3: Initiate body rotation through impact. Short finish ().

Repeat: back to → drop → rotate. The middle pump is the shallowing sensation—arms fall, elbows tuck, ceiling constraint is satisfied.

Epic Fail: Shoulder Spin from the Top

If the first move from the apex is shoulder pull, the pump becomes over-the-top. Start each rep from a dead stop at and feel gravity on the arms before rotation.

Progression

  1. Wall Walk (if depth fault present)
  2. Pump DrillPlane Station Connector
  3. Progressive Chaining full chain at 30%
  4. Split-Grip Station for release at speed

Running the Drill

The Pump Drill is a tool, not a full session plan. For the integrated 50-rep session, follow the Elbow Plane Grooving This Pattern plan and The 50-Rep Daily Blueprint. Use the progression below to dose the drill itself within those phases:

  • Practice Speed: ~10% of your max · no ball — 20 pump cycles—dead stop at , vertical drop, freeze at . Check: gravity drops the arms; shoulders do not pull from the top. — 10% Speed Protocol
  • Focus (internal): gravity drops the arms; shoulders do not pull from the top
  • Practice Speed: ~30–70% of your max · ball on — Plane Station or ceiling rod—shaft under the ceiling into the slot. After a breakdown, reset to a dead stop.
  • Focus (constraint): Plane Station or ceiling rod—shaft under the ceiling into the slot
  • Practice Speed: Up to 100% of your max · game speed — Continuous swing with the pump sensation—no freeze on course, but the same shallowing order.
  • Focus (external): Continuous swing with the pump sensation—no freeze on course, but the same shallowing order—not a body-part checklist
Optimization: Chain to Full Swing

After 20 clean pump cycles, link into Progressive Chaining (4-Point Freeze) and scale from 10% → 30% with a teed ball.
